Schools

Children learn from movement and physical activity. It is important that children learn fundamental movement skills so that they are able to acquire more complex sport specific skills at a later stage of development and participate confidently in organised sport and physical activity. Research also shows that children with well developed fundamental movement skills are thought to have enhanced cognitive functioning, memory, concentration, behaviour and academic achievement.

Sport Wellington’s main aim when working with schools is to:

Promote, educate and support the growth of Fundamental Movement Skills of school age children and to provide pathways to sport by providing professional development opportunities to teachers, students and whanau.

Sport for Schools

Looking for a sport provider to come into your school?  Sport Wellington now has a generic place on our website where you can access information about sport programmes that could be run in your school to support teachers in teaching specific fundamental movement skills.

Why not have a look at this list of providers.

Active Schools - Register of Interest

The Young Persons Team at Sport Wellington is now calling for registrations of interest to schools who would like to work collaboratively to develop, promote and grow the Fundamental Movement Skills of their children and to provide pathways to sport by building capability in school communities.

From 2011 onwards Sport Wellington will be available to work with schools on a project by project basis for a time to be agreed upon by both parties (dependent on the size of the project).

When you agree to work with us, Sport Wellington will:

  • Fully engage with the school in in-depth work for an agreed upon period of time, free of charge.
  • Reduce price for (or offer at no charge) attendance at Sport Wellington workshops/events.
  • Give preferential attendance at the Stadium Sports Festival for those primary schools with MoU's with Sport Wellington at the time of the school selection for the event.

If you would like to know more about this new and exciting opportunity to really make an impact on the lives of your children and the wider school community,  please feel free to contact Georgina below.

Sport Wellington can work in-depth with sports clusters to ensure sports tournaments are of quality and an enjoyable experience for all concerned. This could involve:

  • Meeting with event organisers for pre event planning
  • Linking in outside providers to the tournament and or overall strengthening of the zone

Sport Wellington maintains regular communication with many zone convenors and endeavours to send a representative to zone meetings where they are working in-depth. Sport Wellington collates zone information and produces a calendar of zone sports tournaments. If you require information for your zone events please contact your zone convenor in the first instance.
