Active Families aid the Jones's successOne Johnsonville family, the ‘Jones’s’, will be taking part in the 2012 AMI Round the Bays 7km Fun Run/ Walk. They have been on a fantastic journey, starting from when they signed up to Sport Wellington’s Green Prescription Active Families Programme, contracted by the Ministry of Health. They aim to help you and your children to get active and learn about healthy eating. Mya Jones, 7, is the youngest. Her mum, Justine, is incredibly supportive of the programme and both attend the weekly activity sessions in Johnsonville on Wednesday afternoons and are very engaged with the programme. They decided to join in October 2010 after Justine had seen the programme in action in Porirua. She successfully graduated from the programme December last year, but is staying on as a mentor for the newer families. Since being on the programme Mya has become incredibly active and does something every day after school. She said ‘I take part in Swimming, karate, tennis at school, netball (where mum and grandmother will be the coach) and I would also like to do Hip Hop’. |

Another Success with Green PrescriptionI have always been overweight. Just recently it got really bad. I had put on 30kg in about two years. I wasn’t enthusiastic about anything. In the end, I went to my doctor. He knew I didn’t want to use medication, and that I wanted to make lifestyle changes that stuck, so he suggested a green prescription (GRx) This year, I have lost 9 kg and for the first time in my life I am enjoying exercising.
